de500 and the consvar command

hey all;
we just rolled out the latest greatest thing in networking. ok, its just
switched fast-ethernet, so its no big deal. BUT, my alpha 800 didnt
autonegotiate tu0 (a de500 nic) up to Full Duplex 100baseT. i have heard
people complain about the de500 tulip nics not autonegotiating before.
usually one must explicitly set the nic to FD 100mb in SRM. can i use
consvar to set it in SRM and is there any way to change it from Half-Duplex
10baseT to 100FD without bringing it down to SRM and setting it in SRM? i
am wondering if using consvar to do this will cause runtime problems and
thus a Big Headache for me.

if at all possible i don't want to reboot the machine.

thanks in advance -- a summary shall be forthcoming.
