I have an Alphaserver 2100 running Digital Unix 4.0E. In the past
week it has had 3 events where I had to reboot. The first time, it
reported swap space low and refused to fork any processes, making it
impossible to examine the system. The second time, I found lots of
processes stuck in the U state, presumably waiting for I/O. The third
time I was able to examine more before rebooting and likewise, there
were over 1000 processes stuck in I/O wait. It looked like a problem
with the advfs filesystems. Any advfs command I tried (showfsets,
showfdmn, chfsets) would hang, though df would report on either advfs
or ufs filesystems. One very busy advfs fileset (the main user fs) was
full, though the domain has free space.
Has anyone seen this sort of behavior? Is it likely to be an advfs
problem? I seek any advice on how to avoid it.
