I am using the Power Edition of NetWorker 6.02 on an AlphaServer DS20
running Tru64 Unix 4.0f. Since this is a problem involving NetWorker and a
Tru64 Unix platform, I am going to post this on the two relevant lists.
We recently added a new Qualstar 412600 tape library to the server. This
tape library came equipped with four AIT-2 tape drives. Strange things
have been happening with this library and I am wondering now if its some
sort of problem with the server. At the outset, we started to get block
size mismatch errors, but those largely disappeared when we removed the
four tape drives and made a change to the DIP switch settings on them.
Our backups seem to be running okay since we swapped out one of the tape
devices on this library last Thursday. This morning, I started noticing a
lot of tape verfication failures from NSR and an error message I never saw
before. The error says:
SJI Failure [0x 29]: Hardware error, no additional sense information.
What in the world does this mean? This error appears to come up on all
four devices. When I tried to unmount a tape via the nwadmin GUI, this
error appeared. It also seems to appear when a tape is labeled. Auto-media
management is enabled.
The server has two LVD SCSI boards (also put in when the tape library was
connected), one board is connected only to /dev/nrmt3h. The first board is
connected to /dev/nrmt0h, /dev/nrmt1h, and /dev/nrmt2h. Another SCSI card
is connected to a single DLT device, /dev/nrmt5h on our old Compaq TL893
tape library which is working fine. I am wondering if the SCSI boards for
the new library are both bad, but it seems rather unusual for two boards
to be defective, much less one.
Any thoughts will be appreciated. I am, of course, reporting this issue to
our hardware service provider.
