A: The answers varied, but generally the only thing that costs money is
the addition license to add the GUI tools and the advanced feature set
which gives you access to many of the real advantages of ADVFS. ADVFS is
at its core is included in the OS, but the bells and whistles are not.

We are going to go ahead and get the tools. I've included my favorite
response below along with the original question. Thanks to all who
responded!

You don't mention whether you're on Tru64 4.x or 5.x, but if you are on
5.0a or 5.1 now, you should go with AdvFS. You don't need the license for
ADVFS-UTILITIES to implement AdvFS in its basic form (one partition, one
domain), but you do need the license to expand domains and use the GUI and
other utility programs.

Is the license worth it? In your 7 years with UFS, have you ever had a
situation where you had to back up a drive, replace it with a larger
drive, then restore the original data to the new file system? Then you
had to decide what to do with the old drive. Have you ever had to back up
a UFS disk and then newfs and restore to eliminate fragmentation? If the
answer is yes to these, then the utilities pack starts looking good.
