How to increase root partition size.

(without backup/restore)

We have an old 4.0d system that I'd like to upgrade
to 5.0. It had:
        rz0a: /
        rz0b: swap
I successfully moved swap to another disk and commented
out the rz0b swap entry in /etc/fstab and rebooted.

I'd like to increase the size of rz0a to encompass all
of the current rz0a and rz0b, which are contiguous.
I booted the cdrom, got into single-user mode, and am
trying to use "disklabel -e" but it won't let me
write the modified disklabel for rz0a/rz0b - says:

Partition 'a' is in-use; cannot modify its size or location.

I've seen other queries about this in the archive, but no
good solutions/summaries. Is there a way to do this? I
WILL summarize!

TIA!
