automount problems

I am having problems automounting a remote volume. The volume
mounts correctly with the mount command

mount -t nfs -o intr,bg,hard,rw,noac stkensrv1.fnal.gov:/sdss /mnt/tmp

but with those same options in an automount map the volume doesn't
mount...
we do see the directory but there is nothing in it.

Other automounted volumes on the same system are working fine.

Any idea what could be wrong?

(If it's any help, the same volume automounts fine on Linux machines
and on some but not all SGI machines).
