Thanks to all who replied.
Most of the early suggestions included most things about problems with NIS
however we don't use that here.
But Bryan Whiting at Compaq recommended me to hint our support contact to
search for case BCGM810F0 where a simliar problem had apparently occured
previously.
We have now recieved a patch and the system has been stable for about a
week and has shown no more problems. There was also a temporary workaround
available by restarting 'prpasswd' but we haven't had to done that either
and would of course not have to do that on a regular basis.

Subject: Login problems
Hi!
We have an AS1200 here running Tru64 V5.1 which are experiencing some
strange problems.
This Monday the machine suddenly stopped accepting logins (telnet, ssh,
su, CDE). The prompt would just hang instead. A reboot would lead to the
CDE-login screen not starting up ok. After Compaq had unsuccessfully tried
to fix the problem we replaced the system disk and the machine would run
without problems for about 40 odd hours. Then it happened again.
Anyone who has experienced this before and/or knows a solution to it? No
system resource (memory, swap, disk, pttys) seem to be exhausted and
kernel parametres have been raised to quite high values. We normally have
150 - 300 simultaneous users on the machine and haven't experienced these
problems before..
