The short form of the original question is : Should I upgrade to 5.0a, or
5.1a. from 4.0f ??
The general concensus is move to 5.1 patch kit 3 as this appears to be the
most stable "configuration"
at this time.
5.1a is too new at this time and 5.0 has a short support live has been found
to be "buggy"
Thanks again
Darren

I realize that this question has been asked and answered a thousand + times,
but here
goes for one more time. Plus I am having problems accessing the tru64-l
archive site.
I have 4 systems all running 4.0f PK4, two of the boxes are clustered, one
is DEV/DRP and the
last is for GIS/Testing. These systems are used primarily for Oracle.
To implement a new GIS product, we need to run as a minimum Oracle 8.1.5 and
Tru64 5.0
Now the question is should I upgrade the GIS box to 5.0, or take it all the
way to the latest
release 5.1a ?
I am leaning towards 5.1a, as we will probably upgrade the clustered system
sometime next year and
would give me a good oppurtunity to practise the upgrade/installation
process.

DO NOT STOP AT V5.0 - that was for early adopters only and was quite
unstable.
I'd go with V5.1 and patch kit #3 - that's what we run in production and
have found it very stable. I do have the V5.1A release but have not
installed it anywhere just yet - don't want to be the first to find all the
inevitable bugs. The first patch kit for V5.1A is due out in late December
at the earliest.
Unless there is some overriding feature in V5.1A that you absolutely,
positively need then go with what is known: V5.1 and patch kit #3.
That's my .02 worth.

If I were you, I'd go on up to at least 5.1. The differences between 5.0
and 5.1 are all to the good and there are a couple of patch kits available
for it. I mean, really, would you rather run a .0 version of an OS?
Good luck!

You should go at least to V5.0A. (V5.0 is reportedly buggy and has a short
support life.) I see no harm in going to V5.1 plus patches at this point.
V5.1A, however, is so new that I would wait and see what problems turn up
(either at other sites or on a test system of your own).
Another way of putting it is:
-- do you specifically need the new features of V5.1A that are not already
present and working in V5.1 ?
-- has the vendor of your product got any experience with V5.1A at this
time?
(Same question for V5.1, although there the answer is more likely to be
yes.)

Subject: RE: Upgrade Dilemma
I would skip 5.1a till several months after patch kit 1, and listening to
the heartbeat of others and their experiences. Like many others, I am still
doing 5.1 patch kit 3 upgrades. Providing that 5.1a is good at a later
time, the incremental upgrade should be less drastic than the 4.0f to 5.1.
just my 2 cents.
