SUMMARY: cpio compression

Thanks a lot for the overwhelming response. The solution I was looking for (and as per the "tz" page) was the usage of the device "tapeX_d1" which is supposed to ensure compression, though I have yet to try this.

Some have even recommended usage of "vdump" instead of cpio. However, this backup is supposed to be for the file systems covering Oracle Database v8.1.7 on Tru64 v5.1 and on our new Alpha systems we have used "vdump" only for backup of the whole Unix file systems. I would also appreciate information on any problems faced by people using "cpio" as we have been using it sucessfully for the past 8 years for Oracle file systems backup. Also, I believe vdump should be done file system-wise, is it not?
