Telnet logins

Hi there . I have turned the audit subsystem on to gauge the level of failed
logins and noticed a lot of people making several attempts to login because
of the backspace character initial setting.
The terminal emulation software uses ^H , so I thought easiest to change the
telnet setting
Is there any way to have the initial backspace character ( at login: prompt)
set to control-H ( ESC 8) instead of ^? ???
Each user's .profile has stty erase "^h" to get around the problem for
their session. I could educate them to use control-u to erase their mistakes
, but so much nicer if the backspace key actually worked.
