SUMMARY: How to spin up disks?

Thanks to Dr Blinn, Werner Hahling, Alan and others, who replied!

Solutions/answers:

1. The SRM console sends start commands on boot or when "show devices"
is typed on it. In my case, this didn't help and SRM did not always
even find the disks.

2. "scu scan edt" does the same. In my case, it hung, but saying under scu
prompt: "set nexus bus x target y lun z" followed by "start" did
actually get the disks spinning.

3. The RZ55 disks in question _do not_ have a jumper to get them to
start automatically. They do have a firmware setting to do this and an
utility can be downloaded at
http://www4.service.digital.com/support_database/index/epid79.htm This
did not work in my case either.

After one more test on a linux-machine, I concluded the disks are
indeed broken and probably cannot be read with any normal system.
