SUMMARY: v5.0a is not necessarily 5.0a?

I described a situation where an upgrade using a 5.0A
CD from my field service person took me to T5.0A-2,
according to "sizer -v".

A number of people responded very quickly with very
discouraging news. Evidently this is an old beta test version
of 5.0A, and it's not yet clear if I can upgrade to regular
5.0A from it!!!!!

Here's a sampling of responses:

Bad for you because:

        a. You actually downgraded to an earlier test version.
        b. Field test release can't be upgrade to anything, not
even the real version of that version.

Pat Charron said:
what you have is the old "field test" version
of 5.0A which pre-dates the shipping version by about
6 months. The shipping version of the base os should
be:

'Tru64 UNIX V5.0A Operating System ( Rev 1094 )'

You need to get the REAL V5.0A base OS media, then you should be
able to update from what you've installed to the REAL V5.0A, and
from there go to the real V5.1.

T = Test
That CD is a copy of a beta-test pre-release of 5.0A.
It was supposed to have been destroyed when field test finished.
If you look closely, you'll notice that the data side isn't silver:
it's a CD-R disc. (editor's note - he's right!)

There are indicators that the V5.0A CD in your possession is a Beta CD:
1. Any version that has a T in front of it is a test version
2. V5.0A shipped April 24, 2000. A December 1999 CD must be a Beta
3. Color is white

sigh...
Thanks to all the respondents, and everyone wish me luck!
