Hi All,

I got a bunch of responses from Tom Blinn, Alan_at_nabeth, John Becker, Jim
Belonis, Bob Klenotiz, Kurt Ludwig... Thanks.

The status is this. I have been suggested to try many things. I booted the
machine using installation cdrom and exited to shell, (didn't mount
anything)..and did the following:

(1) disklabel:
"disklabel -r dsk0" gives the partition table and indicates AdvFS
partitions on a, g and h, as I had configured it before. All seems okay.

(2) scu:
    scu -f /dev/rdisk/dsk0a
    scu> tur
scu> (came back with no error or message)
    scu> verify media
did a block-by-block verification and came out with
    no error messages

(3) uerf: "unable to open system config file"
"uerf -D /dev/disk/dsk0a" or something like that.

(4) mount:
    mkdir /tmp/mnt (created a directory in /tmp)
=> Question, when I boot using cdrom, where is this
/tmp? is it a virtual file? How am I able to write
    stuff into it?
    mount -u -t advfs /dev/disk/dsk0a /tmp/mnt
I am not sure if this is how to do it though.
says "No filesystem found" or something to that
    effect.

(5) file /dev/rdisk/dsk0a gave an output of
/dev/rdisk/dsk0c: character special (19/18) SCSI #1 "BB01821AC3" disk #1
(SCSI ID #0) (SCSI LUN #0)

(6) /usr/field/diskx: Was not found on the cdrom.

HOWEVER. The new news I have is that sometimes,
specifically when I type scu>help
the machine goes down saying something starting with:

ftx_bxmeta_rec_reXXX: Domain "root_domain", volume 1, BMT Page 5 Bade page
Id(0)
AdvFS domain panic; domain root_domain ID ox3b9*******
An advfs domain panic has occured either due to a metadata write error or an
internal inconsistency*****
Please refer to guidelines anin AdvFS Gude to File System
Administration**************

I put the '*****' because the message flashes for a few seconds and disappears,
so this is all I could copy down.

(7) I tried changing the memory sticks around, that didn't help either.

Dr. Tom Blinn thought I need a lot of luck, it appears that I also need tons
more of help because I have no clue as to what is going on.

Thanks in advance!

INITIAL POSTING:
Dear Gurus,

We have an alpha XP1000, 667MHz, 1024MB RAM, 3 Hard
Disks (18.2GB). Running Tru64-5.1.

A short while ago a user tried running a program
requiring lots of memory (display intensive),
<Powerstorm350>. The process hung, and while trying to
close the window, the machine crashed - halted.

When I try to reboot, it says

halt code 2
kernel stack not valid halt
>>>

Well, very little info on this on the archives. I
recently re-installed the O/S. I didn't do a firmware
upgrade, and don't remember what version it was, but
the previous O/S was OSF4.0F, so its got to be related
to that. (update 5.4 atleast).

I just booted off of the firmware update CDRom, and it
was unable to boot using the default kernel. nor the
generic kernel. it did claim to, in the end, update
firmware.

It still does not boot. Same error.

Any ideas?

***********first update***********

Thanks so much for the quick responses:
-> John Becker, Bob Klenotiz, Kurt Ludwig, Alan_at_nabeth

After initial replies, I tried:

* Cold reboot <same error>
* boot using installation CD <worked>
* but didn't go ahead and re-install
* firmware update cd -- here, it, at one point
asks for "bootfile:" <press return for default
  bootfile>
* I hit return, and then it says
  (boot dka0.0.0.6.1 -flags A)
  Unable to open dka0.0.0.6.1 <uh-oh!>
* I hit ^C here, and it actually goes ahead
  and updates the firmware (!)
* After this I tried re-install CD, and it reflects
the newer firmware (so does the bios message on
  starting up).
* I now have a newer firmware (5.8), and am trying
the same process. Again same (unable to open dka0)
* Is my hard disk gone????

* When I booted using install CD, I tried
-> mount swap partition on dka0, (dsk0b): worked
-> mount dsk0a which contains root partition,
it says "dsk0a contains an ADVFS file system"

???

thanks a million!
