Last July I had the internal CD of my Alpha 200/233 repaired (by Compaq, I
was just going to change maintainer, and the device had been giving
troubles like occasional i/o errors when mounting the disk, or even while
reading ... they were reflected in SCSI CAM errors in the uerf log).
They replaced the original device (which in my boot messages appeared as
rz4 at scsi0 bus 0 target 4 lun 0 (DEC_RRD45 (C) DEC 1645)
with another one, only yesterday I noticed that it is a different model
rz4 at scsi0 bus 0 target 4 lun 0 (DEC_RRD47 (C) DEC 1206)
Yesterday, after a day of intensive use, suddenly the CD does not work any
more. When I try the usual mount -r -t cdfs -o rrip,noversion /dev/rz4c
/cdrom (on the same disk I've been using before, and which I can use
safely on another Alpha), I get this error
/dev/rz4c on /cdrom: No such device or address
But the device files are all there !
/dev/rrz4a /dev/rrz4d /dev/rrz4g /dev/rz4b /dev/rz4e /dev/rz4h
/dev/rrz4b /dev/rrz4e /dev/rrz4h /dev/rz4c /dev/rz4f
/dev/rrz4c /dev/rrz4f /dev/rz4a /dev/rz4d /dev/rz4g
Also there are no SCSI CAM errors in the uerf log. At PROM level the
device is seen (show dev), and also during boot.
Is there an inconsistency between the new RRD47 and my old V3.2 OS ?
Or is it likely to be an hardware fault (in which case I'll have to try
the serivces of the new mantainer !)
