Sorry if this is a little lengthy but I think I might have some sort of
problem after a system change and am not real sure where or why...
I've recently moved the root disk of an Alpha 4100 from an old 2gb SBB style
disk to a slightly less old 9gb SBB style disk. The method I used was
roughly the following:
1) partition the new disk to taste
2) create new AdvFS file domains/filesets on the new disk
3) install AdvFS bootblocks on new disk using disklabel
4) `vdump | vrestore` the relevant disk partitions from the old disk to the
new
5) run a `verify` on my new domains to check they are intact and happy
6) edit /etc/fstab on the new disk to boot from my new root domain and so on
7) edit /etc/sysconfigtab to make it use the new disk for swap
8) shutdown and do a `boot dkb400` where dkb400 is, obviously, my new disk
Not long after this my network monitoring software (Big Brother -
http://www.bb4.com) starts complaining it can't create a temp file somewhere
in the depths of my /usr filesystem (one of the filesystems moved from old
disk to bew disk). I see no other errors anywhere besides this software
complaining about this file, nothing in my EVM logs, all other systems
(oracle, several apps etc) are running fine and the software seems to be
working perfectly in every other manner.
I try `su -` to my BB user and proceed to do `touch somefile; ls -l
somefile; rm somefile` several times inside the assigned temp directory to
make sure the user can create files and do a few checks of permissions and
the like, no problems whatsoever.
I know this is really vague and I believe I've done the right thing (or at
least the best I know how) and just want to know if anyone knows of any
issues I'll have caused while doing the move in this manner as opposed to
something like dd or cpio etc.
I guess it's worth stressing I'm not asking about how to move root disks,
I've done it already, but if anyone has a reason why the way I've done it
isn't quite right and could cause strange errors I'd be happy to hear it.
I'll post an update should I find any more 'symptoms' of something being not
quite right.
