I had to post one more summary, because I have recieved more replies to
my summary than to original question.

I was going to do a backup of our spare 1000A and to use it for other
purposes.
To have it done faster I have pulled out internal DDS tape and connected
DLT drive to outside SCSI connector.
DLT drive is ON and has unique SCSI address, but still not seen on SRM
console.
I was told that it's an old problem, but nobody seems to know what the
problem is.
Can anyone give me any clues on this, please.
Doesn't DLT work with 1000A?
It works OK with our ES40, XP1000 and even with old AlphaStations 255.

The consensus is that QLogic SCSI controller inside AS100A doesn't
support both internal and external buses at the same time.
External SCSI connector might even be disconnected from SCSI controller.
NCR 810 SCSI controller inside AW255 is designed to support external and
internal SCSI buses simultaniously.
As someone from Compaq rightly said, my assumption that anything, I can
see on Compaq box, should work is an "arrogant, ignorant and incredibly
naive one".
Well...here we are then.
