permissions on .forward parent directory

I have a group of users who share access to their home directories with
permissions rwxrwx---. This seems to disable vacation mail since
sendmail complains about a Group writable directory message in
mail.log. Is there a mechanism for allowing both a group writable home
directory and a functioning vacation mail?
