We're running Tru64 version 4.0G on a DS20 box with sendmail version 8.8.8.
Our one office is running a database application whose client feeds Outlook
2000 for bulk e-mailing. This worked fine until about two weeks ago.
Nothing changed on either the client side (at least that we know of) or on
the UNIX side but now it sends about 20-50 e-mails then stops dead. The
messages hang in the outbox indefinitely.
On the UNIX side we're seeing this in the mail logs:
Oct 23 09:24:29 beta sendmail[1065]: JAA0000001065: lost input channel from [172.16.32.176]
Oct 23 09:24:29 beta sendmail[1065]: JAA0000001065: from=<hesss_at_dickinson.edu>, size=0, class=0, pri=0, nrcpts=1, proto=SMTP, relay=[172.16.32.176]
These same PCs can use Outlook to send personal messages without incident.
The vendor has been consulted and, of course, they don't see any problem on
their end. The UNIX box they use is our library server because it doesn't
have nearly the e-mail volume as our primary mail server. However, if we
switch their SMTP setup on the PC to point to the primary mail server, the
problem happens there as well. We're pretty well baffled by this one. Any
ideas as to what's happening and, more importantly, how to fix it? Thanks.
