Read error - can't find license

I have a DPW500au with Tru64v5.0a. I had to reboot the machine today and it
reported a read error on the hard disk. It eventually will boot up and show
the CDE login screen. It also reports a read error in the console window and
that it can't find any base license. It is not possible to login remotely. I
am preparing to replace the drive and reinstall. However, there is a small
amount of data that I would like to get of the system if possible. Is there
a way of getting into the system if it cant find its license? In some
maintainance mode perhaps?
