Thanks to all who responded so quickly. Most suggested I boot into single
user mode - I managed that (boot -fl s at the >>> prompt). Thankfully I
managed to make a tarball of the data I really wanted and ftp it to another
machine. Unfortunately it is part of my /var partition that has hard read
errors. I could not rebuild the lmf database to get the license working
again. Dr Blinn suggested using the Advfs verify command to repair the
partition but the dammage seems so extensive that it would not work.
