Do I need to use the DLT cleaning cartridge?

Dear Managers,

I have a Digital TL891 Tape library containing a single TZ89 DLT tape
mechanism.

This is sitting on a shared SCSI bus between two Alpha GS60 servers running
Tru64/TruCluster 5.1.

Is there a way of determing (remotely) if and when the tape drive needs to
be cleaned? (Apart from a long walk to the other side of our campus and look
at the front panel on the TL891)

I am hoping to write a program/script to automate the cleaning process.
