SUMMARY: Audit subsystem install - kernel config

To the get the system back on the network so I could remotely log in:

# init 3 ==> bring her to multi-user mode
# ifconfig ==> reconfigured nic cards
# /sbin/init.d/inetd start ==> Starts network services
# /usr/sbin/route add network Gateway ==> manually add routes

Thanks to Raul Sossa. He pointed me to the "Change your hostname
permanently" document from Compaq, so when I reboot I won't have to do
it all again...always a plus.
The problem was I needed to change the first line of the system
configuration file (/usr/sys/conf/HOSTNAME), ident, to my current
hostname.
# sed -e "s/OLDNAME/NEWNAME/" OLDNAME > NEWNAME
# rm OLDNAME

Thanks,
Ashley

Subject: Audit subsystem install - kernel config

Hi there,

I'm running Tru64 5.1A, no patches, on a Alpha 2100. Last night, I
decided to get the audit subsystem up and working. I started Sysman
auditconfig, which guided me through a kernel rebuild. I received a
message: "cannot find /sys/ORACLE-DEV" (Oracle-dev is the machine
hostname). In all of my "late night brilliance", I decided to just
rename the /sys/QASYS (the old hostname of the system) file to
sys/ORACLE-DEV.

Once I renamed the file the kernel build went beautifully. It then
prompted me to reboot, which I did. I came in this morning with the
following message:

Checking for Installation tasks ...

Executing Installation task ...
IFS=

Mailcheck=600
Path=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
/sbin/rc2: test: argument expected
IFS=

Mailcheck=600
Path=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
/sbin/rc3: test: argument expected
IFS=

It's just like it's a brand spankin' new kernel. I can login but it's
text based and none of the services are started, included net...makes it
pretty tough to remotely administer.
When I tried everything I could think of to fix the problem, I replaced
the newest kernel with the previous one (before I made the change), but
still the same issue. It's almost as if it's running in single user
mode, so I tried running "init 3" on the command line...nothing.

FYI: Compaq support suggested looking in /sbin/it.d directory. There
is only one subdirectory, bin. inside it a few files including,
ap_install, c_install dnconvdir, cnconvert....

I would appreciate any help you want to offer!

Thanks,
Ashley
