bad file number

I have a situation in the /tmp directory where there are a handful of files
with a "bad file number" status.
I checked the archives and Compaq support and both indicated running verify
will fix the status allowing the files to be deleted.
I spent most of yesterday afternoon with a Compaq engineer to solve this
with no results.
The best I was able to do was rename the /tmp directory to /junk and
recreate a blank /tmp directory with the correct permissions to allow normal
processing to continue.
So basically I have 2 questions:
        1. other than a restore or rebuild is there a way of deleting these
files?

        2. will leaving these files in the junk directory cause problems
down the road?

thanks in advance,
