using a DAT drive

I have a DS20 running tru64 v5.1, I have a seagate scorpion 240
6 tape dat autoloader.

Previously this was usable as /dev/tape/tape0. The scsi
chain has had new disks added and the dat has been moved to
a second scsi chain. For some reason the /dev/tape/tape0
format is no longer there, although the tape shows up as
/dev/changer/mc0.

I need to get it back to /dev/tape/tape0.

# hwmgr -view devices
 HWID: Device Name Mfg Model Location

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
   72: /dev/changer/mc0 DAT 06241-XXX bus-0-targ-6-lun-0

---------------------------------------------------------------------

dsfmgr -K does nothing.

What am I doing wrong ? All the manuals seem to suggest
that the /dev/tape files should be automatically set up when
the tape is detected.
