lpr problems

I have a system that I'm trying to configure a printer for.
The printer is an HP printer with a jetdirect card. The printcap
entry I'm using looks like:

test:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/test:\
        :mx#0:\
        :rm=<ip of printer>:\
        :rp=lp:

(stolen from a linux box)
lpd seems to be OK with things, as does lpq, but lpr memory faults
and dumps core when printing a simple 10 line text file.
(lpr -P test file.txt)

any ideas?

thanks,
