Hi managers,

first thank you very much to

Talawala, Murtaza [murtaza.talawala_at_digital.com]
Fletcher, Joe [joe.fletcher_at_Metapack.com]
Dr. Thomas.Blinn_at_Compaq.com [tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com] answer below
Selden E Ball Jr [SEB_at_LNS62.LNS.CORNELL.EDU]
Dave Love [d.love_at_dl.ac.uk]
Octave Orgeron [unixconsole_at_yahoo.com]

who spent the time with my problem which I could have solved myself reading
the manuals carefully.

Solution:
Open3d is not supported in TU 5.* (see release notes for V5.0). Instead
there exists a driver for my graphic adapter PowerStorm 4D51T on Associated
Products CD 2 - previously I searched for "open3d". I installed this kit -
and all works fine! Without this driver the console works in VGA mode which
I found not smart.

Here is the answer of Dr.Blinn:

The "Open3D" software product was basically retired in V5.x and a
part of it is now better integrated into the base OS, but I'm no
expert on where it is, I don't personally EVER use it, although I
do know some of the engineers involved with it personally. It has
been very poorly managed in the past, we are hoping that will get
better with time. But it's important to understand (so you will
have the right expectations) that the original software package
was developed by a hardware focused group that was outside of the
UNIX software group, that they never really understood the value
of continuing support for the installed customer base, that for
the most part, they really didn't care if their software worked
when a new OS release came out, they didn't want to test the new
software releases with old hardware, etc. And the UNIX group had
no particular interest in workstations and graphics; the mantra
is that the real money is in large servers, that workstations and
graphics are a minor and shrinking part of the business, and that
it's not worth investing in making them work well (as evidenced
by the poor support for, say, CDE, as well as the limited support
for new graphics hardware even for 2D interfaces). So what you're
seeing is the direct result of (in my opinion poorly implemented)
management decisions to prioritize graphics support far down in
the product requirements, combined with years of bad decisions on
the part of the people who USED to manage the 3D graphics software
business for Tru64 UNIX (who are, fortunately, mostly gone now,
but their legacy lives on).

Tom
