Sometime later, I got information from Tom Sweeney at Compaq.

It turns out you can get tickets vanilla KDC iff you specify the
encryption type as `des-crc', i.e. `kinit -e des-crc ...'. You can't
currently use the SSO stuff to build Kerberized net apps, though it
`should' be possible. Kerberized services are apparently in the works
for a future release.

I'll stick to Heimdal for now.
