DLT8000 compatibility

Dear Managers,

This might be considered a bit off topic - please forgive me!

I have several users who regularly return from external laboratories
with data on DLT8000 tapes (as tar archives). These tapes are easily
read on our Tru64 5.1pk3 cluster using the TLZ81 library, however, the
library is in our locked server-room so the users would like to use the
Tandberg DLT8000 attached to an SGI O2 in our terminal area.

Unfortunately this doesn't work:

mango % tar tvf /dev/rmt/tps1d5nrns
tar: tape premature EOF; may need to use -b option

As far as I know, the tape was written with the default 20*512 byte
blocksize (on an HP machine)

As I said above, this is a liitle off-Tru64, but I'd appreciate any
pointers people could give me.

Many thanks,

Andrew
