Slow NFT performance

Hello managers,

we are expiriencing a very slow NFS performance between two
alpha server DS20

The first server (4.0f) runs as mail server and the second (v5.1)
mount via NFS /usr/spool/mail. When I use my mailbox from the second
machine and remove a message I have to wait tens of seconds before
exiting the application (pine, elm). The size of the mailbox
is around 10Mb and /usr/spool/mail holds about 500 files.

Note that writing big files to the mounted partition is
fast enought (just a few seconds).

As seen on the list I tryied to set doreaddirplus and do_client_readdirplus
kernel variables to zero but nothing change.

Is there a workaround?

Thanks,

Remo Iori
