Thanks to Timothy Brown, Dr. Thomas Blinn, Jay Leafey and Raul Sossa for
your responses.
Timothy and Raul suggested updating the firmware, which is a good idea
regardless and has been done.
Dr. Blinn and Jay both correctly identified the problem as an ECU
configuration error. Below is Dr. Blinn's summary of the problem and
solution:
Your system is clearly set up to use a serial console, and the kernel
would like to use a serial console, but it isn't finding the serial line
hardware:
> pci0 (primary bus:0) at mcbus0 slot 4
> eisa0 at pci0
and then nothing. In the console, do a "show config" and if you can
pipe it to more, do so. You are looking for whether the console can
find and report the serial line devices. I'm guessing that the console
is seeing them just find, but that your EISA configuration data is hosed
for some reason. Find your ECU diskette (EISA configuration utility)
and re-run it and save the configuration data. That should be all that
you need. Or try running with the graphics console, assuming you have
the hardware to do that.
(Strictly speaking, it's not "NOTHING" after it sees the EISA bus
interface, it reports other PCI options, but it doesn't report anything
on the EISA bus, and what's reported depends on the EISA configuration
data which is exported by firmware
to the OS for use in system configuration.)
Here is the root problem:
> configure_console: No serial driver from get_info
> No kernel console driver installed
but the console does seem to know about the serial line:
> com1_baud 9600
> com1_flow SOFTWARE
> com1_modem OFF
> com2_baud 9600
> com2_flow SOFTWARE
> com2_modem OFF
> console serial

Good Morning.
I have and AlphaServer 1200 which was physically abused in transit. The
system boots to the console OK, and the test utility indicates the the
CPU's and memory are OK. I am trying to install TRU64 5.1A on the box
and get the following error during the CD boot:

I am connecting through the serial port via terminal emulator on my
laptop. Does anyone know what the above error means and how to correct
it?
TIA
