Problem Solved, thanks to the few that replied but ended up being a simple
solution.

The Cron defrag routine was running at the same time as the database backups
were, we simply changed the time defragcron ran and we are back to our
normal times.

Thanks.

Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but I've just been thrown into
learning
Unix quicker than I expected. Anyways, here is the setup:
Alpha 4100 with 2/533 and 2 gig RAM
4.0f with cumulative patch kit
Progress 8.3b and MFG/PRO 8.5e.

Database sits on a RAID 0+1 set, and is taken offline at 2 am everynight
for
a backup using the progress probak util. Before the upgrade to 4.0f it
would take approximately an hour to backup to a different drive, now
after
the upgrade it takes about 2 hours, and seems to take longer everyday.
Now
here is the kicker, after moving to 4.0f we purged about 20% of our
records
in the database, and it is taking just as long.

Are there any known performance issues with 4.0f? I appreciate any help
at
all. Thanks!
