How to get RMC console on ES40 to provide terminal access?

I've been playing with getting the RMC console on an ES40 to
allow us to provide complete remote console support.
I can get access to RMC with the funky string, but the commands
in RMC are not the whole console subset. Further, I don't
get any standard terminal access outside of RMC.

How can I get access to all the console level commands on this
system, via a serial port? Do I need to do some system configuration
to configure a tty to listen on the port? Will that actually
provide console access, or is this just not do-able?
