rsh: permission denied

Hello admins,

let me tell you about a nice little problem:

I have 4 ALPHA workstations with tru64 5.1A patchkit 2 which I will call
"A", "B", "C", "S".

A, B, C should allow user root of S rsh commands. Therefore I created a file
/.rhosts on A,B,C:

# ls -al .rhosts
-rw------- 1 root system 21 Apr 3 14:58 .rhosts
#
#

Content of .rhosts: "<ip of S> root"

Now the nice facts:

User root on "S": rsh "A" ls ok
                             rsh "B" ls ok
rsh "C" ls Permission denied !!!

Another test: I changed /.rhosts on "C" allowing access from "A". Logging on
on Host "A" as root the command

                    rsh "C" ls works fine.

---> I am not able to let "S" acess "C" !!!

I see no messages in any log files on "S" or "C" (/var/adm/messages,
/var/adm/syslog.dated/current ...)

Any ideas?
