inetd/ipcs security patches on earlier revs (4.0d) or patch levels

Regarding the recent inetd/ipcs security patches that I need to apply to many
systems fast...

We have a lot of systems at 4.0d/e or at earlier than the required patch level
(e.g., 5.1a PK1, not PK2 or 4.0f at less than PK7). Some are production so I
hesitate to upgrading or applying a large patch kit too quickly w/o testing as
it risks something breaking.

Has anyone tried copy the installed files from 4.0f/g to an earlier/unsupported
version (4.0d/e)? (Of course doing an unsupported copy like this is also risky
but we need to close this security risk quickly on several systems.)
