Hi,
We run a mixed bag of Tru64 boxes, from v4.0F up to v5.1A. One of the
machines is an XP1000, which has v5.1 loaded. When I tried to logon to this
box at the box, a couple of minutes ago, after the passwd window
disappeared, a grey console window on a dark background was the only thing
that was on the screen for a long time (maybe 1+min or 2min or 3 min). This
console window appeared without the usual CDE window manager adornments, and
had messages about not being able to connect to the nfs2 server on the very
same box. After some time elapsed (the 1 or 2 or 3mins), the computer screen
came up with the login screen again. After filling in the login prompt for
name/passwd, I was able to logon to the box.
I have noticed similar nfs messages on other boxes, when I have been trying
to logon at the console monitor. I'm not sure, but this could also have
something to do with slow remote logons, however, not being at the console
monitor, means you can't see what is comming up in any console window.
I have checked the automount maps, but can't see anything. I have tried to
remember whether this thing happened before automount started being used, I
tend to think that it might be connected to automount. I'm not sure why any
nfs connections are going over nfs2, rather than nfs3 as 4.0F is the oldest
version of Tru64 we are using. Over the years, it has been noticed that
where a machine has an nfs link established to a server, and that server
goes away, then a lot of processes on that machine just seem to hang, one of
them being logging in/off.
I guess my question(s) is(are)
(a) does anyone know what is going on, ie why is a box trying to establish
an nfs2 connection with itself.
(b) why is it mainly the console which is affected, and not eXceed (X11
emulation) connections from a PC (I guess because the computer goes through
a slightly different authentification process, but why is it so different).
