ldapsearch gives invalid DN Syntax

Hi,
we got an ES45 with 5.1a took LDAP from the COMPAQ distribution CD
installed everything.
slapd starts (debuglevel 5) tells something with TLS: not been seeded
with enough data which we can circumvent by specifying a RANDFILE -
anyway:
ldapsearch always tells us invalid DN Syntax

Any hints are pretty much welcome,
