Thank everyone for the quick responses. It is good to know that so many
people from HP Engineering read this list. It is as I had suspected. There
is no need to install PowerPath in 5.1A, and the frame is not configured
correctly. In Tru64 5.x the Director bits need to be set differently. And
my problem is caused by the "C" bit not being set. Jan Mark Holzer sent a
whitepaper that he has written about this very topic. You can get it from

Thanks again..

Subject: EMC Symmetrix and T64 5.1A Multipathing
Good afternoon everyone. I am in a bit of a quandary and need some advice.
I have an EMC Symmetrix Frame SCSI connected to an Alpha 8400. The box was
running 4.0G up until this week with no issues. Monday I dropped the box
and did a clean install of Tru64 5.1A and IPK3. The box sees the storage,
but it has assigned a /dev/disk/dsk device to every path to a logical volume
on the Frame. I understand why it is creating the dsk devices, but I don't
think that the Frame should be presenting each individual path to the OS.
But I will not hesitate to say that I know nothing about EMC storage. I was
advised by EMC to install the PowerPath software, but that apparently did
nothing for me other than recompile my kernel and install some utilities. I
still have multiple dsk devices and it didn't create and /dev/power/ devices
as it did in 4.0. I have been advised by HP that the configuration of the
Frame needs to change to upgrade from 4.0 to 5.x, and EMC is looking into it
for me... I asked this question to our EMC field rep three weeks ago and he
told me that nothing had to change. Can someone possibly shed some light on
this for me? TIA...
