Multiple Network Interfaces on the same subnet

Fellow sysadmins,

We are investigating how to alleviate some of the workload of our primary network interface. The Network card is almost completely busy all the time, on the system in question. Traffic here is a mix of NFS activity as well as application/database(e.g SAP). Has anyone run into a similar issue and knows of a good way to isolate/separate this network traffic onto two interfaces?

So we are talking about two interfaces on the same subnet. We would like the application to use the one interface and the NFS activity to go over the other. Gigabit is still a little bit in the future and we need to do something right now. Since the system having the problem is V5.1, LAG is out of question.

Outgoing connections are less of a problem because the system would pick an interface with fewer connections. But incoming connections are a different issue. We were thinking more along the lines of static routes....But one of the problems that we see is "how do we force the application to use the new interface without breaking or reconfiguring it?"

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
