Thanks to Naveet Verma, Phil Farrell and Robert Lang for their replies.

I found no better solution than the kernel config mods listed below. I
ended up logging a support call and was also told that the best fix was
the below kernel mods. I was also told that any previously promoted
downloadable patches we're no longer considered usefull. The kernel
mods was the final answer. Someday this system will be able to be
upgraded to 5.x to resolve it once and for all...

We have a 40g+PK3 system that is hanging whenever a 'ps' command is
used. A reboot fixes it temporarily but I can't be doing that in
production too often :-) When we first experienced this problem a long
while ago were given a fix of removing "options RPTY" from the kernel
config and adding pseudo ttys (pseudo-device pty 512). We have done
that on several systems and it seemed to help. Today we have a system
that is not responding to that fix. (Another proposed fix of upgrading
to 5.x is not an option at this time for us.)

I searched the archives for 'ps hang' and tried a few things suggested
like checking /proc etc.

Anyone else have ideas?
