Many thanks to Nikola Milutinovic, Olle Eriksson and Brusche, Johan.
As you may recall I have a factory-new ES45 running 5.1B with 1st patch.
My problem was dxadvfs not starting and simply returning 1 as $status
(Of course I have ADVFS-UTILITIES pak installed).
With the help of HPQDEC people I discoverd a log fine
/var/advfs/gui/advfs_gui.log which had some errors:
Mon Mar 10 10:23:38 CET 2003 | ERROR | File open failed. | File app_hostlist.c | Line 428
Mon Mar 10 10:23:38 CET 2003 | ERROR | A system error occurred: No
message of desired type
| File app_hostlist.c | Line 430
Mon Mar 10 10:23:38 CET 2003 | ERROR | File open failed. | File

Mon Mar 10 10:23:38 CET 2003 | ERROR | A system error occurred: No
message of desired type
| File app_hostlist.c | Line 430
Exiting due to fatal error.
Mon Mar 10 10:23:38 CET 2003 | INFO | Exiting due to fatal error.
| File app_init.c | Line 451
The above message couldn't help but I recalled several years ago I had a
problem with vdump/vrestore related with the value of the $LANG
environment variable. I use tcsh and in .cshrc of any machine of mine I
set
LANG=en_US.ISO8859-1
Of course the same was on the new ES45.
So I tried to
unset LANG
and soon after, MAGICALLY dxadvfs started as supposed to do !!!
>From that moment on, dxadvfs starts properly reguardless the value or
the existance of the $LANG environment variable !!
So I solved such a very strange problem!
Hoping my work can be usefull to some other alphist,
Ciao to everybody from Italy,
Emanuele
