Dear all,
I need to upgrade the backup capacity of a server which currently has
a single DLT tape which is no longer sufficient to fit all the new
data disks.
A number of options have been suggested by our vendor but one of the
requirements was that the solution be compatible with both Tru64 Unix
and Windoze (because in the long-term the cunning plan is to replace a
single, solid, DS20 with one or more crap Windoze servers). It
appears that the Compaq MSL5026DLX Tape Library fits the bill.
Not having used these beasts before I would appreciate some feedback
from the list, in particular:
1) Can I use these Tape Libraries with vdump? This is to say, if I
start a vdump to /dev/<whatever> and the first tape finishes will
the tape library load the second tape automagically and continue?
2) Is is worthwhile investing into the upgrade to SDLT 110/220-GB?
With respect to question 1) from the vendor information I gather that
it is "Supported by most of well known Backup Software, i.e. Veritas,
ARCserve, Legato Networker etc" none of which we use for a simple
reason (cost, non negotiable, "false economies" is a company motto).
Any comments are greatly appreciated,
Arrigo
