Strange behavior of HSZ80

Managers,

I have a reduced raid set on a HSZ80 controller, with one of the disk
(DISK30900) having failed. Although two identical disks were available
in the SPARESET, the controller did not automatically pick up the spare
disk.

Here are some screen prints:

HSZ80:TOP>show R5

Name Storageset Uses Used by
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------
R5 raidset DISK10900 D301
                                             DISK20900
                                             DISK40900
                                             DISK50900
                                             DISK60900
        Switches:
          POLICY (for replacement) = BEST_PERFORMANCE
          RECONSTRUCT (priority) = NORMAL
          CHUNKSIZE = 256 blocks
        State:
          REDUCED
          DISK10900 (member 0) is NORMAL
          DISK20900 (member 1) is NORMAL
          DISK40900 (member 3) is NORMAL
          DISK50900 (member 4) is NORMAL
          DISK60900 (member 5) is NORMAL
        Size: NOT YET KNOWN

HSZ80:TOP>show sparesets

Manually, setting the replacement policy to NOPOLICY and trying to
replace one of the spare disks did not help either.

HSZ80:TOP>SET R5 NOPOLICY

HSZ80:TOP>Delete SPARESET DISK30300

HSZ80:TOP>set r5 rep=DISK30300

Error 3190: Unable to replace DISK30300 in R5

Am I missing something? Another anomaly that I have observed is that the
controller is unable to recognize the size of all the member disks of
the failed raid set. For e.g.

HSZ80:TOP>show DISK10900

Name Type Port Targ Lun Used by
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------

DISK10900 disk 1 9 0 R5
          COMPAQ BD0366349C 3B06
        Switches:
          NOTRANSPORTABLE
          TRANSFER_RATE_REQUESTED = 20MHZ (synchronous 20.00 MHZ
negotiated)
          LOCAL
        Size: NOT YET KNOWN

System: TRU64 v4.0g on an Alpha server 4100
Controller: HSZ80 Software V83Z-0, Hardware E06

I will summarize.
