SUMMARY: lpd issue after pk3 to pk6 update.

Thank you to Dr. Thomas Blinn. He pointed me to a post PK6 patch (HP Tru64 UNIX V5.1A PK6 - Premature TCP Connection Termination Problem). This fixed the issue with the large print jobs.

I am still getting the messages, once in a while, for other small print jobs, however the print jobs are not reprinting. I called HP who suggested using the jetdirect port to configure the printers. HP recommended setting up printers using lp option instead of the rm option for network printers using TCP/IP, because it will manage the flow of data better than rm. I have not tried this at this point.

In addition, HP was going to submit a debugging request to engineering, but since we do not have a Prior Version Support contract we reached a dead end for now. However, engineering did believe that the reset is occurring after otherwise normal communication. HP believes that the reset should not be occurring, since it is resetting after everything has printed successfully.

Problem:

We have an ES40 running Tru64 v 5.1a. We were running patch kit 3 with no other patches. We had to install patch kit 6 and the new hardware delivery-7 to support some new hardware we recently purchased. We used the patch kit version on the new hardware delivery-7 CD. Some large print jobs are restarting in the middle of printing. This is not happening all of the time, just once in a while. Since the updates, we are getting the following kinds of messages in the lpr.log:

Aug 19 08:41:41 mega1 lpd[89390]: ERROR -- read_all_chars: read() failed, error: Connection reset by peer
Aug 19 08:41:41 mega1 lpd[89390]: WARNING -- sendfile: no response -- return REPRINT
