8mm tape drive on VMS V5.3

The Question is:

I am working on a older Mvax 3100 running VMS 5.3x.  We are considering
attaching a generic 8mm tape device on the SCSI bus of this
system to reduce the number of tape changes during system backups.
Does this version of VMS support generic SCSI devices for backup?

The Answer is:

    This version will see generic SCSI devices.  But the fact that we see
    Generic SCSI devices does not mean we support them.  That version of
    VMS does not support any 8mm tape drives.  That does not mean it will
    not work, just that we neither tested it nor warrant it.
