Backup huge RAID 0+1 on HSJ

The Question is:

Config:
2 VAX 7000-720 servers in a CI cluster
4 HSJ40 contollers
72 disks in a Storeworks cabinet
36 primary disks in the front, 36 shadow (host-based) in the back
Many of the disks are striped on the controller, the shadowed
on the cluster.
(We have read the DSIN article regarding "Shadowed stripe sets vs.
Striped shadow sets", and we are looking to change our configuration.

To do backups during the nightly run, we split the host based
shadow set, back one set up to tape, and run the nightly run
against the other mounted shadow set. When the entire night run
is complete, we sync the shadow sets back up.

We want to use RAID 0+1 at the contoller level, however, this means that
we can not use our current backup strategy.

We are investigating the HSJ40 CLONE command to do this, but we are
wondering if this is a smart (or dumb) idea. The basic premise would
be to create a clone set on the HSJ40, then dismount the disks from VMS.
Then break the mirror on the contoller, via SET HOST/DUP, and then clone
the disks. When that is done, we would resync the mirror sets on the controller.

This sound quite risky. Is there a better way?

The Answer is:

The only OpenVMS supported method to perform a live backup of such a
beast would be to use Spiralog and perform a live backup. However,
reading about the HSJ CLONE command, it should do what you want if
you have anough disks to perform it, but OpenVMS is not involved in
    that process.
