Cabletron Systems has recently introduced a new version of firmware for the VNswitch 900 Product Family. This firmware version (v3.0) was made available to installed-base VNswitch customers in early-September 1998 via the world-wide web. With this firmware release Cabletron is continuing a past practice of offering "free" firmware upgrades (via the web) to installed-base VNswitch customers; thus allowing them the immediate benefit of new functionality and enhancements.
This specific firmware release includes the following enhancements. Full details are available in the Release Notes AA-R0N1J-TE available on the web at

- Web-based management enhancements allowing configuration and management over the Internet.
- Border Gateway Protocol (BGP-4) Interface allowing exchange of network reliability information among autonomous systems.
- T3/E3 and T1/E1 ATM ModPHY support for VNswitch ATM modules.
- New Command Line Interface (CLI) functionality supporting new ATM phy configuration commands; ATM counters; duplicate MAC; RMON history and statistics; bytes counters; Year-2K compliance; and command-line editing and command line completion.
Installed-base VNswitch 900 products manufactured prior to January 1999 and with firmware versions below V3.0 support only 2-groups of RMON (Alarms and Events). The new V3.0 release of firmware will enable an additonal 2-groups of RMON (History and Statistics) on ethernet switches only with the use of new hardware versions of the 12-port 10BaseT and 12-port 10BaseFL modules. Customers with VNswitch 900's which shipped with firmware revisions prior to V3.0, or which are below the minimum hardware revisions stated below, will not enable the additional 2-groups of RMON.
