I've not had this problem with any other freeware, but Shadow seems to
produce a quirk in the archive header... or the archive file is not being
properly created:
--------------- cut ----------------------------
cc -o su -g smain.o env.o entry.o susetup.o shell.o sub.o mail.o motd.o sulog.o
age.o tz.o hushed.o libshadow.a -lsocket -ldbm
ld:
Can't read archive header in: libshadow.a (Error 0)
*** Exit 1
Stop.

The makefile 'protects' libshadow.a with the ".PRECIOUS:" statement, for
what that's worth.
Suggestions appreciated (flames accepted for stupidity),
