Thanks for all the many replies.
The answer in short: use AdvFS.
AdvFS allows you to clone a filesystem, which produces a snapshot of the
system, which you can then backup using vdump or indeed DEC NSR (network
save and restore). I had been intending to move to AdvFS soonish anyway
(just because people said it was nice), but now I definitely will.
The general concensus was not to use dump on a UFS partition, as it can
lead to trouble.
