V1.3 -> V3.2a upgrade

Hi -

        I'm planning to upgrade from V1.3 to 3.2a in a few days time. Can
anyone tell me the best way to save all the user data etc. before I do the
upgrade? Should I use tar, cpio, dump? Is there another possibly better
utility I should use instead? Thanks, and I'll post a summary...
