Hi Managers:
We're having some problems with the graphics cards on a couple of
identically configured 3000/600 AXP workstations. They are model
PMAGB-EA/EB 24-plane 3D, "mid-range" PXG+ with 1280*1024 resolution and
72Hz refresh rate. The symptoms show up when we try to display images on
an IDL canvas. Most of our images are bigger than the dimensions of the
canvas, so it provides scroll bars to move through the image. Our
problem is that when parts of the images are scrolled off of the canvas,
they appear to be "lost", so that when we try to scroll them back, they
appear black, as if the pixels were all zeros. (It turns out that this
problem also happens on a PMAGB-FA/FB PXG Turbo+ card on a 3000/800.)
However, we don't have the problem with simpler 8 bit graphics displays
such as the PMAGB-BE/BF HX cards, or those on a number of X-terminals or
other workstations; the problem only appears on these 24 bit graphics
cards.
After a number of conversations with RSI and the DEC CSC, and having RSI
talk to the DEC CSC directly, we were advised to install the latest and
greatest of OPEN3D and OSF/1 (v3.2b). We did, and the problems are
still there. According to the IDL developers of IDL at RSI, the problem
comes from improper handling of off screen pixel maps or backing store
with the 24 bit support in the depths of the X or Motif libraries. I'm
not familiar enough with X to understand what that means, so I'm posing
the questions to the members of this list:
1. Does anyone know what this problems is?
2. Is someone within DEC aware of any problems like this? If so, is
there a patch of some sort forthcoming?
3. Could this be a configuration problem that we totally missed?
Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide.
